Poster Reaserch

As part of the project me and my partner have to create a 'poster' demonstrating an advertisement of our soap opera. We have decided on a billboard as a more specific type of poster. Billboards demonstrate various major story lines coming up on a programme. Billboards are an expensive method of promotion so would only be used on key upcoming story lines. A billboard is a very localised method of advertisement and in order for one to be effective it needs to be very eye catching, striking and able to instantly put the message of the billboard across. The reason for this is primarily billboards are mostly viewed by people in cars etc and view them passing by.

Channel four and all its associated channels are great users of billboards in order to promote their up and coming story lines. A statement photo is used with brief text is used to ensure the purpose of the billboard is conveyed. The Hollyoaks bright color scheme used before immediately signifies and hints to the audience of what it entails. It signifies danger and almost a warning with a hope of catching the audiences eye.
The first Skins poster uses a a natural photo with little editing which signifies the attempt of realism. With again, very little text the producer is trying to convey as much information as possible through a statement photo. There is a wide variety of things happening in the photography which intrigues the audience to want to know what the programme is about.

TV Trailers

TV Trailers have become a massive part of promoting soap operas up and coming story lines. They have become more and more advanced over the years in order to keep up and appeal to the current times target audience. They are primarily used as a persuasive technique to the general public. Stereotypically they tend to be very dramatic and exaggerated of what is actually coming up. New technological advancements that have been introduced have become the primary factor of the changing and development of TV trailers.

In the past, like the one shown below, form the first episode in 1984, shows a very basic and short trailer, promoting the time of the programme, which didn't involve much information about the newly started programme. In the present time this trailer isn't very appealing however in the past when first issued it would have been up to date and stereotypical to what TV trailers were in the specific era. However the TV trailer show above shows an up to date representation of a stereotypical TV trailer. It involves famous characters, more in depth story lines and information which comes across as more appealing and informative to an audience.

An present day trailer may be focusing on soley on one character and its up and coming life story. Their target is to make the audience realsie the storyline and what the soap actually is without any 'old fashioned' voiceovers to create as much realism as possible. This includes for long running soaps like Eastenders, Hollyoaks and Corrination Street, using famous familiar characters and easily recognisable communal places eg; pub, shop, a street or a schoole ect. Long running soaps like; Eastenders, Corrination Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks have a huge fan base ranging from all ages. Some of viewers have watched the shows for 20 or more years and the programmes have become a part of their life and watch them religiously.

TV Listings

TV Listing magazines (eg; 'whats on tv') are magazines which are released weekly and first began to be introduced in the early 90's. The magazines stereotypically features; a TV programme/time listings, news, soap opera 'gossip', programme reviews and as well as entertainment for example; competitions and puzzles. They are usually priced at an average of 45-60 pence.

What ties TV listings in with my soap opera project is that most of TV Listings alike Whats On Tv's main covers are used to promote up and coming TV soap headlines. The reason for this is, for one, soaps are a primary focus on TV so attract a lot of consumers.

The overall appearance of the magazine is very bold and vibrant which attracts the audiences being very eye catching. As a general pattern there tends to be no set colour scheme and comes across as very 'random'. From analysing a Whats on TV magazine I have found that the text it contains has a very simple, yet formal tone to allow the language to be appropriate for it's target audience. The magazine does however use various slang, for example; 'dump', 'shock kiss'. In conclusion the front cover and overall feel of the magazines seems to be a mix of informal and formal of images and text which is similar to a gossip feminine style magazine.

The target audience of TV listings would stereotypically attract a working class audience, for the main reason of it's very affordable and also in my opinion, stereotypically the working class would enjoy the genre of programmes advertised in here more. A more 'educated' class (eg, professionals) would enjoy other TV listings magazines (e.g.; Radio Times) which might feature and advertise programmes which might come more to their interest. The magazine stereotypically would appeal more to women rather than men because of its feminine 'chat' and soaps do generally appeal more to women which it when becomes their primary target.

Evaluation of Soap Operas

Eastenders
Eastenders is a long running British Television Soap Opera which first broadcast on the BBC 1 on the 19th February 1985. For the past 25 years Eastenders has focused on a broad range of story lines revolving around the domestic and professional lives of people who live in the East End of London. In my opinion it offers an attempt of a realistic representation of what a working class enviorment is like living in the busy capital of London.

Mise en scene
In an attempt to create as much realism as possible the Eastenders producers attempt to when designing the houses design them being as realistic to of what extent a family's/characters house would realistically be like depending on its income and stereotyped class category. For example Billy who earns a very basic salary and comes from a lower working class background the flat he shares with his granddaughters Lola is very basic and a little outdated. This is shown by the lack of furniture, basic lack of technology. In contrast The Brannings have a much more luxury interior design which includes the latest gadgets, nice cars and fashionable clothing presented. Various story lines in the soap opera demonstrate being wealthy, for example Lauren going to private school in America.

Camera Angles
The Producers use various different kinds of camera angles to demonstrate status and authority in society.
Various different camera angles and techniques the producers use are all part of an aim to make sure that the footage appears with as much 'realism' as possible. Which includes making sure they aren't too 'arty' and full with loads of obvious to the eye effects.

Lighting
Natural lighting is used specifically while filming soaps as its supposed to create a realistic representation of what time of day it is. It's more cleverly used to create a obvious mood, for example in this picture to my right, the lighting used is dark and dull to represent the characters mood and the atmosphere in the room.

Target AudienceMost Soap Opera's of the present day, to ensure viewers try to attract all possible audiences. They stereotypically tend to do this by having characters of all ages for viewers to relate to and be able to enjoy the story lines revolving their specific age groups. For example; Laurens drink problem. A teenager would enjoy a storyline like this as perhaps they have been through or are familiar with the concept of people as young as them going through a alcohol problem. Generally they may enjoy watching story lines of people their own age rather than Dot Cotton's story lines as they may find them hard to relate to and get the entertainment factor.

Hollyoaks
Hollyoaks is a long running British soap opera which is screened on Channel 4. It first came to our screens on the 23rd October 1995. It was first created when similar kinds of shows like Brookeside and Grangehill were very popular however now both Grangehill and Brookeside have been cancelled. Unlike TV shows like Eastenders, Hollyoaks is centred around the Local Community College in it's early years. The show has greatly expanded over the years and has gone from just a minor number of just seven major characters to 50 characters in the show. Hollyoaks is available for viewing pre-watershed. However in the past few years the producers have introduced a spin off show called Hollyoaks Later. It features different characters from the normal programme a few each episode. The episodes have become and annual event and tackle more serious and explicited issues and is shown on our screens at 10 o'clock and is later repeated at 11 o'clock.

Mise en Scene The target audience of Hollyoaks is far more narrower that TV programmes like Corrination Street and Eastenders. Its primary focus is 16-early twenties. Adults have always been featured but that's down to linking the young adults lives to their family life. However over the years as Hollyoaks has become increasingly popular more and more story lines have been included involving story lines reltable to all different ages. For the teenagers and young adults Incorporated in the show they tend to wear high street fashion clothes which teenagers in reality may have similar or can admire. This creates a sense of realism. Your teenage years are all about experimenting on fashions and trying to be unique. Hollyoaks recognise this is key and have a broad range of different 'sterotypes' of people. For example; Newt wears very Gothic clothing to try and fit in with the stereotypical 'Emo' or 'Goth'. While the character Michaela may be seen as a stereotypically blonde 'chav'. These stereotypes are inforced into the show to portray what it's like being a teenager. Perhaps the reason why the show has been so successful as teenagers and young adults can watch this and relate to a broad audience of characters.

The surroundings shown in the programme show a very working class Enviorment with a very average standard of living. However alike in real life people are always more successful than others and the show does portray a reasonably broad range of incomes and backgrounds. For example Hedi was very glamorous and wore lavish clothes and her house above the pub which she owned with her family was no different. The property shown fashionable wallpapers, leather sofas with an extensive kitchen. However the McQueen's for example have a very different standard of living. All of the women live in a small council house with reasonably old fashioned and cheap interior. All the furniture in the house is random and isn't colour co-ordinated, which is perhaps very typical for a family with a lower income. The initial primary focus of the show was revolving students and it's 'student digs' have always been a key focus. The student living flats are very basic and typical for University Halls. Small, quite plain with limited furniture in the bedroom.

Camera AnglesThe producers use various camera angles to incorporate and demonstrate like all typical tv shows alike Hollyoaks, authority and status in society. If someone was being attacked on rhe ground, in order to create realism the production team would use a high angle shot in order to show the attacker is in power at the present time.

LightingLike all TV in the present day and throughout time TV producers use a natural lighting to create a normal everyday mood. However when there is a negitive scene or mood for example, they producers might use a duller shade of lighting to support the mood. However its important for the producers to keep the lighting as neautural and realistic as possible to have realism.

Target AudienceHollyoaks originally as explained before, has an orginal targeted audience of older teenagers (16)- early twenties. However as the programme has grown so has its audience and the programme has been forced to move with the times and its audience to accomodate all its audience. In the current time Hollyoaks has a very broad audience age. The target audience would would have enough time to continuously enjoy the TV programme and enjoy all the day to day exagerated story lines it covers.

Soap Operas

There and various types and genres of long running soap operas available for regular/daily entertainment. Different soap operas appeal and are appropriate to different audiences. The most nationally recognised TV soap operas stereotypically are; Eastenders, Corination Street, Emmerdale, Holloaks, Doctors.

Why do people watch soap operas?
Most soap operas are designed to be able to relate to their target audiences life. In general society soaps are often seen as a comfort blanket to their audience as its a representation of reality. Most soap operas are set in a working class environment and are seen as an escape route out of their busy and possibly stressful lives and as they are screened so regularly the audience feel that they know the characters as if they are 'real'. Topics and issues that generally tend to fixate soap operas drug use, infidelity, child abuse, divorce, pregnancy, homosexuality, racism, education, bullying and relationships. They offer advise and to gain an understanding that a persons not alone in a situation and that their are other individuals going through the same thing. However some proportion of the audience simply enjoy the entertainment the soap genre offers. Soaps offer excitement and laughter for an audience. Someone once said that people watch soaps to feel better about their own lives.

Introduction to A2 Media

When finding out what the A2 side of my A Level Media course would contain I was thoroughly pleased with the prospect of what it includes. It has offered a good range of creative and exciting choices that we could choose to target our coursework on.

The brief that has caught my attention most overall is brief number 5 which includes creating a promotional package for a TV soap opera. The general appeal that influenced me to choose the specific brief is that TV soap operas is something that I enjoy discussing, watching and analysing for my own personal entertainment. Being able to create a promotional package would be a fun and new opportunity. Recently I have been interested in the idea of how soap operas are continuously marketed to ensure the continue of good ratings of the show. Creating posters, magazine covers and web pages along with in depth research will be a educational experience for me because it will enable me to learn how this process is put in place.  I took into serious conderation if i wanted to work on my own or work as part of a group/duo. After discussion with my course peer, Tilly we discovered we were interested in the same breif so decided to colaborate.

To kick start the project we are currently beginning to start some initial research of what the brief criteria includes and what we will need to do in more detail.

Evaluation for double page spread

Here is the small version of my final copy of my double page spread for my music magazine. A larger image is attached further down in the blog.

One major difference from producing the front page and contents to the double page spread was the amount of text it contained. I had to consider a number of aspects before writing my article, including what kind of tone to use, informal chatty colloquial language or formal Standard English. After much consideration I decided to use Standard English with occasional informal language. I decided upon this because the target audience is further educated students who generally would have been educated enough to understand and appreciate that type of language use.

I decided to feature the main cover star as also the feature of the main article in the magazine; however this isn’t unusual, it’s very typical for a magazine to carry this convention. The shot that I used isn’t posed and is an action shot. Part of the reason I selected this specific picture was that it indicated an natural effect in an ordinary environment which conveys an un-materialistic tone.

The colour scheme used is the same throughout to keep in form with the house style. I felt like adding more photos onto the double page spread would distract attention from the main photo and clutter up the spread. CLASH likes to keep it's magazine simple and not chaotic, which signifies to the audience that CLASH doesn’t need to have fancy elements to the magazine, the content itself is adequate.

Planning out in advance what house style, colour scheme and other features I wanted my magazine to have, really helped make the process of actually making my magazine a lot smoother and straightforward. I made the title a lot larger than usual as it signifies and emphasises the position of the importance in CLASH.

I included the update of the release of the new single of the artist; this promotes them and keeps the consumer engaged in the story. I feel double page as a whole would really appeal to my target audience.

Interview for Double Page Spread

Exclusively from CLASH we have the highly anticipated upcoming star from Bristol, Gemma Clark to give you the latest of her breakout single of 'Move with the wind' and what it's been like to break into the music industry from such a young age. After a year of juggling her studies and going on a mini tour around the UK, her voice has finally been heard and has been signed up to Polydor Records. Excitingly CLASH have been given the opportunity to meet behind stage of her performance at the O2 Academy in Bristol, bagging exclusively her first interview for a magazine.

So Gemma, you have recently just finished your UK breakout tour, a very new experience for you no doubt. How was the experience for you?

Well from a very young age I've been performing at every opportunity given to me. School productions, gigs at my dad’s local pub and cafes. I've suffered from stage fright. As soon as I'm out there and the spotlights on me, all my fears disappear. Just me, my guitar and the audience. However all the traveling, tiredness and homesickness has definitely taken some adjusting too! It's all been worth it!

How does it feel to be traveling back to your roots of Bristol where it all started?

Ive gone back round to all the places that I used to frequently perform very small gigs for. It’s the performances like that, which really boosted my confidence to excel. It's very nice to be back in Bristol, its been great to get back to a familiar scenery.

How has it been juggling such a time consuming task of a tour and your final year at A levels?

It has definitely taken its toll, it feels like I have 2 full time jobs and on top of that still being able to see my friends and family. However I don't see performing as a chore, it's my most enjoyable hobby and hopefully job for the next chunk of my life. From the beginning of this experience, my priorities have changed drastically. My friends and family have all been very supportive throughout.

Was there ever a point when you thought that you wouldn't ever be recognized?

At times it did cross my mind, but on the other hand I’m still so young. I'm very fortunate to have such great fan recognition at such a young age. However I always knew I needed something, unique and different to set me aside from all the other aspiring performers out there. I've always been fully aware of how competitive the music industry is.

Has there been any point recently when you just wanted to return back to your normal, average teenage life?

Nope, never for one second. I am fully aware that most peoples my age haven’t and won't have the opportunity that I have been given. I'm very grateful for that. There's plenty of time for doing the average, everyday things in the future, but for now this is my priority.

So, what's next?

Carry on performing, work on my new album and hopefully go on another bigger and better UK tour.

Ever thought about wanting to crack the U.S?

*laughs* Getting abit ahead of ourselves now aren’t we!

You never know! I think it's time we wrap things up! Thank you for the opportunity for letting us meet with you. The CLASH team and audience wish you all the best!

Brief Contents Page Analysis

Here attached is a small version of my CLASH contents page (larger one is attached further down in the blog).

Before I started the process of constructing my contents page I imagined it to be a very hard assignment as I didn’t realise how much detail and effort was actually needed in order to complete it to a professional standard. However now the assignment is completed, I’ve realised it’s turned out to a good standard. Practice from my preliminary task and experience from my front cover ensured that my skills were developing in order to produce good work.

Throughout the project I have made some drastic changes to my contents page and have had many un-successes. Through trial and error I have managed to compose a piece I am satisfied with. A huge mistake which resulted in putting the actual production process on hold was editing my photos, I edited 20 photos and soon realised after analysing them that they weren’t quite what I wanted for my magazine. I however didn’t keep the originals in result had to start again taking photographs. However I gained out of the issue experience in editing and practice with photography for my final photographs.

My main goal was to keep the contents page in kept with the house style of my magazine, in attempt to make my 3 pieces as professional looking as possible. I also decided to put one main image only in my contents page as I felt to emphasise the main feature any other images would draw attention away from it.

To keep in key with the professional look of the magazine I used the CLASH magazine logo frequently throughout so it can be easily identified by the audience. In my double page spread under the masthead I composed a tagline. The tagline has connotations of what the magazine is trying to signify, ‘young, fresh and a lyrical genius”. This is presenting to readers what CLASH is about, representing young ambitious performers.

VIBE

Throughout my project VIBE has become a huge inspiration in producing my own magazine. Despite the fact VIBE is a very different genre to my own magazine, the color schemes, language used, images and setting have proved to have turned out very similar.

VIBE use very central simple images for their front covers, which I chose to convey into my own magazine.

One aspect of VIBE which I was inspired by the most was the color scheme, which I personally found so effective I decided to use it in CLASH. The color scheme is very effective because of the simplicity yet contrast it carries. It color scheme to me signifies power, success and dominance.

My completed double page spread

Changes I made to my Double page spread

Through my own fault unfortunately I don't have the first copy of my double page spread but I thought id note the various major adjustments made to the layout.

Primarily the main text and my photograph were faded on top of each other, overlapping. However I decided this wasn't the right look for my double page spread as the black and white picture dominated the text making it difficult to read which would put an audience off from making a purchase.

I organically had the title in the pre-downloaded font 'Arial', I then realized it didn't give the magazine the professional looking edge I was edging towards so decided to download a font especially too add a unique element to my CLASH.

I also originally used a white, black and blue color scheme for this specific piece, then I realized that to keep in context with the whole magazine I decided to keep with the red, black and white color scheme to add to the professional edge.

Contents Page Research

Before beginning to produce my double page spread I decided to do some research into different magazine double page spreads and what different types and styles are around the market.

NME is a nationally and globally recognised magazine. The spread that caught my eye was the story featuring Lily Allen. The head line of the double page
spread is using a particularly bold, statement font. Which would attract the readers attention with its bold contrasting colours. The title takes up a huge proportion of the front cover which helps automatically draw attention to the page. The white, clean, plain and refreshing background colour keeps the audiences attention focused on the text and picture.
The name 'Lily Allen' is used Red, again contrasting and emphasizing the name as its the only text featured in different colour to black and white. Also the only other colour featured on the page is the red on Lily Allen's clothing which suggests a clear link to why the chosen font colour for 'Lily Allen' is red.

The dark make up, unflattering, masculine clothing and mannerisms in the photograph suggests that Lily Allen is perhaps rebellious which ties in perfectly with the chosen font. What particularly caught my eye was the choice of font as I think the one chosen works really well with the type of image NME are trying to convey their story like. It's very unique bold and rebellious. The colour scheme as well I feel is very affective.
This Florence and the Machine double page spread has been extracted from one of NME's monthly magazines.

Because of the fact there is only one photo featured on the spread it automatically draws your attention to it as soon as you see it. What primarily caught my attention was the simplicity of the cover yet it still is very eye catching in a very subtle way. The font used throughout the article is very sophisticated and classy. This is carried through throughout the whole page through the color schemes and photography used.
The Primary colors throughout the spread is black silver and red which are very popular colors with NME as it compliments their dominant color scheme. The color of the woman's hair co-ordinates and compliments brilliantly with the United States of America Flag. These key links all ensure a successful professional looking magazine format.

Final Design of Music Magazine Contents Page

Contents Page Research

After completing my Front cover I started upon the task ofbeginning to research and gather inspiration for my own contents page for my music magazine, CLASH.

Despite not being aware of what magazine this is actually from. This contents page immediately caught my eye as its one of the most unique I've come across. Its unusually bare. This may attract a specific kind of reader as it has a fashionable element to it. However something which may look effective but very uneasy to easily read in the size of font used. Perhaps on a real life scale it may appear otherwise but from what I can see the font is far too small and as a contents page is key to a success of a magazine as it educates the reader into what the magazine contains it may defer potential customers from purchasing the magazine.

On a positive note however, the picture is very effective giving off a sense of simplicity revolving the whole contents page around a celebrity shown. This in my opinion makes the contents page seem very upscale. The contrasting small font and large dominant picture draws away the readers attention from the contents information of what the magazine actually contains and leads the focus onto the celebrity featured.
Another contents page I came across that caught my immediate attention is this NME contents page. NME like many other magazines continue throughout their magazine a very similar color scheme and font. This incorporates a very professional feel. The color scheme works evidently very well as they are contrasting colors which enables the text to stand out very easily.

The main headings are emphasized well by putting them in bold with a black background contrasting with the smaller text below. A definate unique factor in this magazine (even though its been cropped out by my poor editing) is the band index. This enables consumers to find out what pages their favored bands are featured in. So far throughout my research I have not come across this feature. This adds an element of uniqueness and individuality to NME. I would love to come up with something new and different to incorporate into my own contents page.

Here is a contents page from the globally recognized 'Q' magazine. The primary photo used here I find very effective as all 4 members of the picture are staring directly at is which automatically draws the reader in making us feel involved.

The color scheme used here is very common as its very similar to the one used above in NME. It's very simple yet effective. The plain black and white with a dash of red works very well and demonstrates that Q doesn't need lots of fancy editing as such as the contents is enough. All of the space used on the page is taken up and used yet again very effectively. When creating my contents page I would most definitely keep this contents page in mind as it has a lot of positive aspects to it which I could incorporate into my own contents page.

Brief Evaluation of Front Cover

On the post below is the completed version of my Music Magazine Front Cover.

Several things inspired me while creating my front cover. One of which was a black and white effect with magazine front covers I came across doing my research. I have made various adjustments from my previous design including editing my chosen picture very differently, including making the editing more subtle by just simply using the black and white tool and not changing the contrast drastically keeping a simple edge to my front cover.

I chose to have a dark color scheme to my magazine as it fits with the 'rock/individual' style that I wanted my magazine to have. Originally I wasn't going to put any color into my front cover but once reviewing it all simply in black and white I chosen to add only one more color into my color scheme, red. I chose red because I thought it was vibrant and signifies power and dominance. The color scheme I feel wouldn't appeal to a young, teenage girl, girly audience as it has a more mature simple color scheme which would appeal to a reader who Isn't interested so much in the material aspects of a magazine, just the content. I feel that the color scheme used on my front cover strongly compliment each other and the theme of the magazine.

The image I decided to use as a front cover was very important and key to the theme of the magazine. I decided to choose this particular image as I feel that it is a very flattering image involving aspects of what a typical 'CLASH' reader may enjoy.
The setting is very important as my photo shoot wasn't set in a very mainstream and typical setting as such. It was set on a quiet city bench at night surrounded by litter of cigarettes and alcohol. Not encouraged by CLASH by all means but perhaps consumers of those objects. This would appeal to a reader as I can imagine a CLASH reader to be very laid back and not at all materialistic.

I felt that I could afford to not add loads of text onto my front cover as I feel the primary picture dominates the page enough and more text would simply 'clutter' up the front cover and would loose its professional element.

I used the word 'exclusive' on numerous occasions presented on my front cover as I felt that It would appeal to a reader because It demonstrates that the contents in the magazine wouldn't be available from any other competitors magazine's. This front cover I feel would strongly appeal to my target audience intended.

Black and White Magazine Reasearch

I knew as I got further to the stage of starting a new front cover that I knew still for definite I wanted my primary background photo to be in Black and White. So I decided to gather various different magazine front covers that use the Black and White edit, that works very well.

VIBE MAGAZINE - I love the use of colour used in VIBES magazine as T.I's comeback into the music industry cover. The covers use of black and white with red features signifies victory and excitement. This works well with the topic of the cover story. The artist on the cover T.I is a globally recognised artist who hasn't had been in the public eye for a large amount of time, having him on their magazine cover would ensure a vast audience.
V MAGAZINE - Features another global phenomenon, Beyonce. Using her as the primary focus of the front cover adds to the sex appeal of the magazine and would ensure a larger proportion of male consumers. Also using a famous icon allows magazine editors to use as little choice of words as they want as the image itself will employ more of an audience. Using bright red as the logo of the magazine shows the authority, power and influence of the magazine, this tries to show consumers that the V Magazine is dominant.

COMPLEX magazine - Also features a dominant icon which again allows the editors to use more bland colours and little font. This portrays the image that the magazine company are trying to portray that they don't need to have loads of information and advertisement on the front cover in order to successfully sell their magazine. Complex magazine looks very subtle and more intellectual than VIBE ect because its not bright and bubbly ect.

I admire Black and White magazine front covers as I think it brings an element of class and sophistication to the table. Also Black and White creates a clear contrast of any colour featured on the front which could bring emphasis to any other points you want in colour with the black and white primary background photograph.

First attempt of my a Music Magazine Front Cover

This was my first attempt at my music magazine front cover. After a discussion with my Media Studies teacher we decided that the magazine wasn't looking and going in the right direction that It wanted too.

One of the changes made in the new cover is:
> Title - I wasn't 100% satisfied with my title choice, after more concideration I decided on CLASH as revolver seemed very grungy and unpositive which isn't something I wanted my audience to pick up on.
>I feel my primary background photo that I chosen to feature wasn't the best choice as I feel that various different editing techniques could of been used to give the photo a very different edge. I plan to use more subtle editing with my next chosen background.

Mise-en-scene of my Model and Photos

This is concerning the the design and arrangement of my magazine front cover and contents page. When preparing all the designs for my make up and clothing for my model, I had to take into serious consideration all aspects of what type of magazine I'm trying to create.
When practicing the make up on my model I decided to keep the face of my model very pale and very dark grungy eyes as I knew I'd be editing my photos into black and white. This added the effect of contrast to my photographs and added to the grungy feel of the front cover. Also I believe the messy, unkempt and not brushed hair gives off a image of carelessness which may be seen as attractive to the audience of CLASH.
I applied red lipstick onto my model which in my opinion signifies a vivid and intriguing character but also adds a sense of 'sex appeal' which may attract more of a male audience.

The clothing choice of my model was decided by researching various different looks and soon realised I had all the costume needed to take my photos.

The ripped black baggy jumper signifies a dark grudge look that we are trying to portray. Also the big over sized dirty jacket signifies that the model doesn't mind what she looks like, and doesn't over think fashion. This may come across on the type of audience that reads CLASH as I would say stereotypically they wouldn't be fashion orientated.
The chosen setting for my primary photographs that I took I decided upon because it was a very typical setting in a village with streetlights surrounded and nothing but a bench. I wanted my photos to consist of my model drinking and smoking while playing a guitar on her own at nighttime. This seemed like the perfect location. Makes the music shown in CLASH to be very unique and simple.

Magazine Decline

During this section of my AS Media course completing my magazine, the topic has made me think about the Magazine Industry. During my research I soon found that the magazine industry is declining on a broad scale.

The prominent reason for this is the internet. The public can access the information provided in magazines on the internet free of charge whenever they want.

For example Q, NME and and Uncut suffered double-digit ear-on-year sales declines in the second half of 2011. Also NME reported a 14% drop year-on-year, to 27,650 sales – a 4.7% decline compared to the previous six months.

However magazine companies are biting back from the set back and have put in attempts to bring back the popularity of their magazines by adding new features too appeal to the public. Such as if you purchase the magazine a code is including giving readers access to exclusive and extra information.

The main font for the title of the magazine to me was a vital point. I spent lots of time researching into what font would be appropriate for my background imagine and genre. I came up with a very broad contrast of ideas.

NEOU
The font 'neou' appealed to me massively because of its freshness. Looks very contemporary and simple. This font is very easy to read and bold which may be factors that catch readers eyes.

Destoryed Aero is a bold statement font with a sharpened rough edge. This would give the logo a very ruggid effect and portray the genre of the magazine.

Fava Black is a commonly used magazine font. You can see why with the obvious fresh and fashionable appeal it brings.
